Description

Alton Glenn Miller was born on March 1, 1904 in Clarinda, Iowa. They moved to Grant City, Missouri in 1915 where Glenn first began playing trombone. The family moved again in 1918 to Fort Morgan, Colorado where he joined the school football team and helped them to win the Northern Colorado Football Conference in 1920. He jumped from band to band until he formed a band and recorded the 1939 hit 'In the Mood'. He recorded other popular songs like 'Moonlight Serenade', 'Elmer's Tune', and 'Pennsylvania 6-5000'. Glenn joined the AAF in 1942 and served as bandleader for the AAF Orchestra in Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star for continuing to play throughout a V-1 buzz bomb attack. He went MIA on December 15, 1944 on his way to Paris to organize a show for troops who had liberated the city. During this short flight, his plane vanished and he has yet to be found.
